As mentioned in my first post I have been busy preparing for a charity bike ride across America, I just wanted to write briefly about it in a post.
I’m basically cycling 3200 miles from SF to NY over a period of 28 consecutive days. My aim is to raise 10k for children with deafness or cancer.
The inspiration behind the ride come from my father, Mike Prendergast. When I was growing up he raised over 50k for charity in the form of grueling bike rides. He cycled across America, Australia and Canada, as well as round the coast of Britain. I’m immensely proud of my fathers achievements and I wanted to do something similar myself. Almost 20 years later I’m attempting his first foreign ride which was America and named Ride For The Child.
I announced the Ride to Joe Public on the 1st September 2015 and it was only after that I realised just how tough it was going to be. I hadn’t rode a road bike in perhaps 8 years, I had never done anything endurance like this before and, worse still, I was not in good shape. I’ve spent the last year training really hard to get myself ready and it has been a real slog, both mentally and physically.
With only one month left until I start, it’s been an unbelievably quick year. The training and organising has been hugely challenging, but I have learnt so much in the process. In addition to the huge improvements in my fitness, other achievements include having an article featured in The Guardian newspaper and appearing on BBC2 (video below).
I set off for America on the 29th August and will begin cycling on the 1st September. Touch wood, I should arrive at the other side of the country 28 days later, having covered 3200 miles on a bicycle!
There are a huge amount of posts and lots of information on the website, I have also included some links below if you wanted to follow. Of course I would absolutely love a donation and some support too!
